How to be a morning person – even in Winter!

Even if you are a morning person in the summer, is it even possible to rise and shine with a smile on your face in the early hours of a frosty winter morning? It’s cold. It’s dark. And you’re enveloped in the oh-so-glorious warmth of your bed.

We’re here to tell you that it is possible. If you’re struggling to get up right now, we challenge you to try these things and notice the change in many aspects of your life. Honestly – you may even fall in love with those frigid early morning starts.

Tip 1: Let there be light!

To wake up like the proverbial ray of sunshine, don’t wake up in the dark. Trade your noisy alarm clock for a lamp that mimics the sunlight, gently waking you out of your sleep. Keen to give it a crack? The team at JB Hi-Fi will help you out.

The alternative is, of course, to put your alarm clock on the other side of the room so you’re forced to get up to turn it off. But if you’re as ill-disciplined as us, you may find yourself falling back onto the bed for a short snooze… and another day of sleeping through your second and third alarm.

Tip 2: Dress for the weather 

We can’t emphasise this enough – check the weather and plan ahead! To speed up your morning routine and give you more time to enjoy that steaming bowl of oats and hot coffee, plan your outfit the night before and have everything ready to go.

If you’re working in an office environment, be sure to layer up. We all know that no matter the weather outside, dressing to suit can be irrelevant when someone in the office cranks up the heat or turns it down to mimic the frozen food section in Woolies.

Tip 3: Shower in the morning 

For some, this is standard practice. But often in this weather the majority of us prefer to shower the night before in the cold of winter! Studies have shown that just a quick shower when you wake up really does help kickstart your day. 

And while some specialists advise that it’s best to end your soothing warm shower with a quick cold shower at the end, we’re not convinced. Yes, we love the idea of it boosting circulation and immunity, but can we just take it slow? Please?

Tip 4: Moisturise

Tip 5: Drink warm water or tea with lemon

Lemon water is all the rage – and although the jury’s out on the health benefits, there are a few things that are undisputable. Adding lemon to your water may encourage drinking more throughout the day, therefore improving hydration. And staying hydrated is critical to good health, especially in Winter, so lemon water is pretty much a win-win!

And if you’re feeling cold, try some tea with lemon. Both refreshing and warming, it’s the perfect pick-me-up before work. 

Whatever your choice, just be sure to rinse your mouth with plain water afterwards – you don’t want the citric acid eroding your tooth enamel over time!
