Top Ryde City’s Guide to Planning the Perfect Christmas

Top Ryde City’s Guide to Planning the Perfect Christmas

The holiday season is upon us and every calendar week seems peppered with an exciting array of friends and family gatherings. Now, it’s your turn to play the ultimate host and put on the perfect Christmas party. But, where to begin? Here is Top Ryde City’s guide to making your Christmas brunch, lunch, or dinner both merry and stress-free!

Step 1: Plan the Menu
There’s nothing quite like food to bring people together, especially at Christmas. However, the stress of entertaining larger groups can take the fun out of hosting a festive feast. The solution is to plan meticulously and cook within your limits.

While aspiring chefs and seasoned hosts might be able to pull off a traditional Christmas lunch comprised of roasted turkey and all the trimmings, novices might opt for a cold buffet.

Think pre-glazed ham, ready for carving, a few platters of fresh crudités and salads, cooked prawns, antipasto, flatbreads and crackers (with plenty of dips!), along with a fruit platter that will please both the eye and the palate.

Step 2: Set the Scene
Be it a glamorous winter wonderland event, or a casual backyard gathering, creating an ambience is essential.

The first thing to consider is your guests and what they enjoy doing at gatherings the most. Do they like to socialise around a buffet table? If so, place a few bar stools or ottomans throughout the space that are easy to move around. If they like a more formal setting, make sure that your decorations don’t reach eye level, so guests can still have a conversation.

For tables, keep your decor simple (a red dining cloth with white placemats and napkins would do the trick) and add a little sparkle with an ornate Christmas tree (two tones always looks elegant), a few bonbons, and an eye-catching centrepiece that you’ve crafted yourself. Even better, get the kids involved, so they feel like they're part of the event.

For something more neutral, consider flowers strategically-placed throughout the space, a few tea lights and, of course, a string of fairy lights twinkling above an outdoor table always adds a touch of magic.

Step 3: Add the Flavour
While we are sure your quiche Lorraine is by far the most flavourful in Australia, we’re talking about adding an entertainment factor to your event.

For the adults, have a playlist ready with all your favourite songs that will be appealing for both those who want to sit and catch up, to those that feel like a boogie after their meal.

For the kids, a crafting table, filled with watercolour paints, sketch pads, and an array of felt, glitter and googly eyes. Christmas-themed games, such as pin the bell on Santa or elf face-painting will always go down a treat.

Step 4: Don’t forget the punch!
What’s Christmas without a fruity punch that packs a punch! Cocktail aficionados can opt to serve their guests a white sangria, while those that want to serve something delightful, yet non-alcoholic, here’s the ultimate, fresh and fruity party punch:

  • 1.5 litres lemonade, chilled
  • 1.5 litres pineapple juice, chilled
  • 7 passionfruit
  • 200g Fresh or frozen raspberries
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • Mint leaves for garnish.

Halve the passionfruit and remove the seeds into a bowl. In the same bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients and add ice when you’re ready to serve.

For those that want to create an alcoholic punch, add 1 1/3 cups of white rum and 1 1/3 cups of vodka. Mix well and add ice before serving.
